What Will I Learn?

ELA B30 is organized into two main units:

The Search for Self : We develop our understanding of who we are, what it means to be human, and the purpose of our lives.

The Social Experience: Every person is part of the larger society and is shaped by and responsible to it. Students examine, critique, and interrogate the society in which they live and consider the actions students can take to create the kind of society in which they would like to live.

  • Angela's Ashes - Frank McCourt

  • A Year in Provence - Peter Mayle

  • The Bite of the Mango - Mariatu Kamara with Susan McClelland

Persepolis - Marjane Satrapi

Required: Hamlet.

Choice of one fiction novel

  • Lord of the Flies - William Golding

  • Animal Farm - George Orwell

  • Brave New World - Auldous Huxley (NOTE: While many of the novels in this course have mature content, Brave New World contains extreme promiscuity and heavy drug use among multiple characters, in order to showcase the themes of the novel. )

  • The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald

  • The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time - Mark Haddon

Choice of one play

  • Death of a Salesman - Arthur Miller (available as a PDF in the course, and audio version can be found in YouTube)

  • The Children's Hour - Lillian Hellman

  • Translations - Brian Friel (this is an enriched, more challenging option)

  • The Crucible- Arthur Miller

  • Wit - Margaret Edson

  • Medea - Euripides, translated by Diane Arnson Svarlien
